We live on a cruise for only £35 a day after selling our home to travel the world

MANY people dream of holidaying on a cruise ship – but one couple quit their jobs and sold their home to permanently move onto one.

Angelyn and Richard Burk set sail on the high seas last May and say that cruising is cheaper than paying off their mortgage.

The couple often spend as little as £35 a day, which includes their room and food[/caption]

Angelyn and Richard are both in their 50s and left their nine-to-fives to hop on different ships to see the world with one suitcase each.

So far their adventures have included a 51-day trip from Seattle to Sydney, as well as trips to Singapore, Italy, Canada, and the Bahamas.

Former accountant Angelyn told Australia’s 7News: “We love to travel and we were searching for a way to continuously travel in our retirement that made financial sense.”

She added to CNN: “When planning out cruises, I try to stay on the same ship as long as possible, as long as it is cost-effective.”

The couple budget for $135 (£109) a day, but often spend as little as £35 a day.

Angelyn explained: “Currently, this year, we have secured 86 cruise days with an average all-in cost of $89 (£72)/day for both of us.

“Which includes room, food, entertainment, transportation, gratuity, port fees, and taxes.”

In total, their enviable retirement works out at around $32,485 (£26,359) for the year.

As the couple are now frequent cruise travellers, they are able to take advantage of loyalty programs for discounts.

The typical cost of a house in their hometown of Seattle is $984,863 (£799,167) with the average cost of a 30-year fixed mortgage with a 20 per cent down payment being $5,034 (£4,084) a month or $60,408 (£49,018) a year.

Angelyn added: “We don’t plan to permanently live on land in the future.

“Where else can you have your resort take you to different countries while relaxing by the pool or sleeping in a comfortable bed?”
